The Golden Instrument for Real Driving Emissions RDE

With an eye on Real Driving Emissions (RDE) proposed in forthcoming European Emission Standards for the type approval of light-duty vehicles, Testo SE & Co. KGaAhas unveiled an innovative portable instrument for solid nanoparticle counting and classification. Testo NanoMet3 measures number concentration in a wide range from 1E4 to 3E8 #/ccm and average diameter in the size range 10 to 300 nm under real driving conditions.

Furthermore, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), on behalf of the European Commission, has completed the feasibility study on the extension of the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) procedure to particle number (PN), honoring testo NanoMet3 as the Golden Instrument for the Round Robin exercise to be carried out from August 2015.

The increasing importance of accurate and cost-effective testing has become a significant issue for the industry. A vast fund of experience in nanoparticle management for automotive, laboratory and environmental applications enabled us to develop a rugged, portable and cost-effective solid nanoparticle counter for on-board and field measurements.

The measuring principle of testo NanoMet3 is based on diffusion charging and constitutes a new method in automotive application for measuring number concentration and diameter of nanometer-sized particles. This technology has been already successfully proven for personal exposure monitors. Since the measuring principle uses electrical charging to count nanoparticles, it not only enhances the quality of the measurement under real-world conditions, but also the cost of acquisition and costs per test are significantly lower. Moreover, hydrocarbon emission measurement will no longer be affected by butanol contamination in the cabin or testing room.

When the sampling point of the Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) during Real Driving Emissions is at the outlet of the tailpipe, the volatile substances may condense into nanodroplets, which can be detected as particles together with nonvolatile solid particles. To measure only the solid particle fraction, it is necessary to condition the sample thermally to remove the volatile fraction. Testo NanoMet3 features a separate sample at the source and conditioning of the exhaust sample according to the Post-Dilution Thermo-Conditioning principle, which is fully PMP-compliant.

The instrument is compact, portable and provides on-line response. Due to these properties it is a suitable technology for particle number concentration measurements in non-laboratory settings. In addition to a standard 100 – 240V AC power supply, testo NanoMet3 can be operated with a 12 – 24V DC battery for on-board and field measurements. The quick response time enables the measurement of transient engine operation, providing a complete data string with particle number concentration, average size, lung deposited surface area (LDSA) and calculated particle mass with 1Hz resolution. The wide measurement range covers practically all exhaust emission standards regarding particle number including the latest requirements of EURO 6.

Testo NanoMet3 enables engineers to measure any vehicle everywhere. Therefore, it is the ideal candidate for RDE type approval as well as for future in-use compliance testing.
